At least 64 people were killed in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's past.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 individuals were arrested.

Approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers participated in the police raid

Violent conflicts broke out when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, in addition to multiple guns.

Mission Context

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Larger Framework

Major law enforcement actions are regular in the South American nation prior to significant global gatherings in the country.

The international environmental meeting the climate conference is set to occur in the city of Belem in the north in November.
