Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures forecast to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

This situation come after this month's bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have additionally been activated for later this week in parts of SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, bringing intense heat to much of the region.

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after strong winds compromised the urban electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out power lines. Severe damage to power systems is expected to cause ongoing issues as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Meanwhile, a region known for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its grayest and foggiest periods on record. A particular form of fog, which usually lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn precipitation that left soils saturated.
