Child of Former South African Leader Zuma Denies Terror-Related Accusations as Trial Begins
The offspring of ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror accusations at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over remarks she published on social media several years back during violent protests in South Africa that came after the arrest of her parent.
A seven-day period of disorder in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and arson, left at least 300 deceased and caused damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and confronts charges of incitement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
Context of the Proceedings
The demonstrations were centered in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's arrest for ignoring a court order to give evidence at an investigation into claims of corruption while he was in power.
She has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her attorney earlier calling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.
She has also repeatedly stated the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her father after he founded his own party and ran against the ruling party.
Support and Court Representation
This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the previous head of state and his relatives.
A small number of supporters from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other organization officials participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has maintained that the proof presented by the state is insufficient and fails to provide compelling evidence for a guilty verdict.
