Climate Heating in New England More Rapidly Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Research Reveals.
The US region famous for its historical past, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a dramatic change. Fresh analysis indicates that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the planet.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The rate of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the contiguous United States, as per the research. The rate of its temperature rise has reportedly increased significantly in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's speeding up," said a lead researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for millennia."
The analysis places the north-eastern US among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, alongside the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist noted.
Analysis Approach and Results
For the analysis, researchers examined three datasets on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They found that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," said the study author.
Key Warming Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are increasing faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other times of year.

Marine Factors and the "Energy Storage"
A major cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat captured by emissions.
In the region near New England, an influx of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Atlantic current. This is directing heated ocean water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the coastline that is then pushed further inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being stored in the sea like a massive battery," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the air and New England is a recipient of that energy."
Consequences on Culture and Weather
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has suffered severe weather shocks in recent years, including devastating floods and prolonged drought.
The rising heat poses a threat to iconic aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been canceled or relocated multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Ski resorts have faced difficulties because of inadequate snowfall.
"I reside just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds all the time," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much disappeared from much of the southern part of the region."
