England to Launch Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they achieve the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an England men’s match since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to host the England side for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, in the event of winning their group, their knockout stage opener would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the elimination stage at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Protest
The championship was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were heckled as they approached the venue by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for the Israeli team to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Placards were displayed with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Fixture List
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be played at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Welsh team if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the final, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract families and help connect with a wider spectrum of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Irish team are due to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would play similarly at Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be reserved for any that do not reach the finals through the qualification path.
Stadiums and Elimination Phase
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.
The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
