European Cup Matches This Evening: Chelsea v Barcelona & More
Greetings to a fresh evening of electrifying Champions League soccer. 9 fixtures are planned for tonight, featuring 3 British teams in action. The Blues face Barcelona in the standout match of the evening, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and Manchester City host Bayer Leverkusen.
Group Rankings
We're at the midway point of the group stage, so the table is starting to take shape. All six British teams are presently in the top 12, but there are only 2 points between 5th and sixteenth position, thus there's a whiff of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. It’s all up for grabs.

- Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (17:45)
- Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (17:45)

Past Meetings
The sole past encounter between Newcastle and Marseille was the Europa League semifinal of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have not faced each other previously. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.
Early Match Updates
Only a single goal in the first half of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has given Benfica under Mourinho a one-nil lead at Ajax.
Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille
Even though The Magpies traveled to the French south coming off their confidence-boosting 2-1 home Premier League win against City on the weekend, and having beaten Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their only on the road win since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.
It's not that Eddie Howe was eager to talk about the mental side of this travel sickness. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the coach, whose side are sixth in the European table, with nine pts from a possible twelve and direct progression to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can draw parallels between them.”
We have a separate live blog for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Murray, the MBM equivalent of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
