Vicky McClure will return their roles in the popular crime series

The beloved crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
