'Treat game'
The legal representative, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the court.
She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.
The man engaged in a "treat game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and request they to eat sweets "as fast as possible".
She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the young males "for many years", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the next day.
She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had worries in summer 2025.
The legal representative stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had suspicions about what was going on, for good reason.
"They chose" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."
Mrs Prior KC explained items including baby oil, ointment and syringes were located, and his stepson notified the law enforcement about his concerns.
She said Ruben proceeded to play the "treat game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were everyone unwell the next day.
"The police had not responded by that point," she stated further.
The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the events.
The prosecutor explained the minors were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the stepson notified the law enforcement a second time.
