A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the mark previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
