The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
