The Red Devils Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
