What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of Vecna. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies beyond the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the truth about the encounter originates in the theatrical production the prequel play.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is understood of Brenner's work, the case almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would genetically impart to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day as a different person. From then on, he struggles with the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in the past.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
